The Lorry Driver is responsible for the safe, timely, and efficient transportation of construction materials, equipment, and supplies between suppliers, warehouses, and construction sites. This role ensures that materials are delivered according to project schedules, maintaining their quality and minimizing delays, while strictly adhering to road safety regulations, company policies, and site-specific procedures. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1.0 Vehicle Operation & Driving

1.1 Operate lorries safely, efficiently, and in compliance with traffic rules.

1.2 Transport materials, equipment, and personnel to designated sites on schedule.

1.3 Plan routes to optimize time, fuel, and delivery efficiency.

1.4 Inspect vehicle before departure to ensure roadworthiness.

1.5 Avoid overloading and ensure proper securing of cargo.

1.6 Observe road and site safety regulations, including speed limits and load restrictions.

1.7 Adjust driving techniques according to weather, road, and site conditions.

1.8 Operate the vehicle under tight schedules while maintaining safety standards.

1.9 Assist with loading and unloading when required to ensure timely deliveries.

1.10 Communicate effectively with site teams to coordinate deliveries and pickups.

1.11 Ensure adherence to company policies regarding vehicle use and driving conduct.

1.12 Conduct pre-trip route checks to anticipate obstacles, road restrictions, or detours.

1.13 Report any operational issues or incidents to supervisors promptly.

1.14 Monitor vehicle instrumentation during transit for safe and efficient operation.

1.15 Maintain awareness of other vehicles, pedestrians, and construction site activities to prevent accidents.

2.0 Vehicle Maintenance & Inspection

2.1 Conduct routine checks of brakes, tires, lights, fluids, and other vehicle components.

2.2 Ensure regular servicing and preventive maintenance in coordination with mechanics.

2.3 Report defects, malfunctions, or damages immediately to maintenance teams.

2.4 Maintain cleanliness of the vehicle inside and out.

2.5 Ensure proper fueling, oiling, and charging of the vehicle.

2.6 Keep detailed records of maintenance, repairs, and inspections.

2.7 Check load securing equipment such as straps, chains, and tarpaulins for integrity.

2.8 Inspect suspension, steering, and transmission systems regularly to ensure safe operation.

2.9 Verify that all safety devices (mirrors, horn, seatbelts) are functional before departure.

3.0 Safety & Compliance

3.1 Adhere to HSE policies and site-specific safety regulations.

3.2 Ensure proper use of PPE while driving or during loading/unloading.

3.3 Avoid unsafe maneuvers, reckless driving, and risky behaviors on site.

3.4 Participate in safety briefings and comply with emergency procedures.

3.5 Report accidents, near-misses, or unsafe conditions immediately.

3.6 Conduct risk assessments before starting deliveries, considering traffic, site access, and load hazards.

3.7 Ensure compliance with road traffic laws and site-specific entry/exit requirements.

3.8 Maintain safe distances and follow traffic rules while driving on highways and construction sites.

4.0 Material Handling & Cargo Safety

4.1 Load and unload materials safely, ensuring cargo is balanced and secured.

4.2 Check cargo against delivery notes to confirm correct items and quantities.

4.3 Use lifting and securing equipment properly to avoid material damage.

4.4 Communicate with site personnel during loading/unloading for safety and efficiency.

4.5 Ensure hazardous or sensitive materials are handled according to regulations.

4.6 Inspect cargo for damage or defects before and after transport.

4.7 Ensure proper use of tie-downs, straps, chains, and other securing devices.

4.8 Follow company procedures for stacking, weight distribution, and load limits.

5.0 Route Planning & Delivery Management

5.1 Plan routes in coordination with site schedules and project timelines.

5.2 Consider road conditions, traffic, and weather to prevent delays.

5.3 Ensure timely deliveries while maintaining vehicle and personnel safety.

5.4 Coordinate with site teams for smooth handover of materials.

5.5 Adjust routes as required due to site access, roadblocks, or emergencies.

5.6 Maintain communication with supervisors or site teams regarding estimated arrival times.

5.7 Document and report any delivery delays, accidents, or route deviations.

5.8 Ensure compliance with delivery schedules to avoid project downtime.

6.4 Coordinate with other drivers and logistics personnel to optimize operations.

7.5 Maintain records of material delivered, quantities, and condition on arrival.

7.6 Report any damages, shortages, or discrepancies promptly.

7.7 Ensure all documents comply with company and project requirements.

8.0 Anti-Bribery Compliance

8.1 Understand, apply, and comply to anti-bribery & corruption management system and policies.

9.1 Identify opportunities to improve delivery efficiency, fuel usage, and route planning.

Job Requirements

a) High school diploma or equivalent; additional vocational training or certifications in heavy vehicle driving is a plus.

b) Valid heavy vehicle or commercial driver’s license (as required by local regulations).

c) Minimum 3–5 years of experience driving lorries or heavy vehicles, preferably in the construction or infrastructure sector.

d) Familiarity with vehicle maintenance, inspection procedures, and basic troubleshooting.

e) Knowledge of traffic laws, road safety regulations, and HSE standards applicable to construction sites.

f) Understanding of material handling, load securing techniques, and cargo safety protocols.

g) Ability to read maps, interpret directions, and use GPS or route planning tools.

h) Experience in adhering to delivery schedules and coordinating with site personnel.

i) Knowledge of handling hazardous or sensitive materials safely is an advantage.

j) Physically fit and able to handle long hours of driving, loading, and unloading tasks.
