JOB PURPOSE

The Senior Project Engineer is responsible for managing and coordinating all technical, engineering, and operational aspects of construction projects to ensure successful delivery within budget, schedule, and quality standards. This role serves as the primary technical lead on-site, providing guidance and oversight to engineering teams, contractors, and consultants, while ensuring that project designs are accurately implemented and compliant with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements. To play a key role in integrating design intent with construction execution, resolving technical challenges, supporting project planning, and coordinating with Project Management, QA/QC, HSE, procurement, and commercial teams to achieve seamless collaboration across all disciplines. In addition, the Senior Project Engineer drives continuous improvement in project processes by identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency, optimize workflows, and implement best practices. The role also includes mentoring and developing junior engineers, monitoring project performance, identifying and mitigating risks, and ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1.0 Project Planning & Execution

1.1 Support the Project Manager in developing detailed project plans, schedules, and resource allocation.

1.2 Ensure technical execution aligns with project designs, specifications, and client requirements.

1.3 Monitor project progress and provide updates to management on schedule, quality, and risks.

1.4 Assist in coordinating multidisciplinary teams to achieve project objectives.

1.5 Identify potential bottlenecks or delays and propose mitigation strategies.

1.6 Review construction sequences and methods to ensure efficiency and safety.

1.7 Ensure compliance with technical standards, codes, and regulatory requirements.

1.8 Provide guidance to contractors and site staff on technical execution and problem-solving.

2.0 Design Review & Implementation

2.1 Review design drawings, specifications, and technical documents for accuracy and constructability.

2.2 Coordinate with design consultants to clarify technical requirements and resolve discrepancies.

2.3 Ensure timely implementation of approved design changes on-site.

2.4 Conduct constructability reviews to optimize workflow and reduce risks.

2.5 Approve shop drawings, material submittals, and method statements in line with project requirements.

2.6 Facilitate design-related workshops with project teams to resolve technical challenges.

2.7 Evaluate alternative design solutions to optimize cost, schedule, and resource utilization.

2.8 Ensure all design revisions comply with project specifications, codes, and client requirements.

2.9 Coordinate with QA/QC and HSE teams to integrate quality and safety considerations into design reviews.

2.10 Track and document all design review outcomes, approvals, and comments for audit and reference.

3.0 Quality Assurance & Compliance

3.1 Ensure all site works meet quality standards and comply with project specifications.

3.2 Conduct regular inspections and audits to identify non-conformities.

3.3 Recommend corrective actions and follow up to ensure proper implementation.

3.4 Collaborate with QA/QC and HSE teams to maintain safety, compliance, and quality standards.

3.5 Maintain accurate records of inspections, approvals, and technical correspondence.

3.6 Review and approve quality control plans, procedures, and reports submitted by contractors.

3.7 Conduct testing and commissioning oversight to verify compliance with design and specifications.

3.8 Ensure all materials, equipment, and workmanship meet project and regulatory requirements.

4.0 Risk Management

4.1 Identify technical, design, and execution risks during planning and construction stages.

4.2 Develop mitigation strategies to minimize impact on cost, schedule, and quality.

4.3 Maintain a risk register and monitor the effectiveness of implemented mitigation measures.

4.4 Escalate high-impact risks to the Project Manager or Technical Manager with recommended solutions.

4.5 Ensure project teams are aware of potential risks and contingency plans.

4.6 Conduct regular risk assessments and update risk management plans throughout the project lifecycle.

4.7 Collaborate with contractors, consultants, and internal teams to identify emerging risks early.

4.8 Evaluate the impact of design changes, site conditions, or material substitutions on project risks.

4.9 Implement preventive measures to reduce the likelihood of technical failures, delays, or cost overruns.

4.10 Monitor contractor and supplier performance to identify potential risks before they escalate.

4.11 Document lessons learned from risk events and integrate them into future project planning.

4.12 Support project management in preparing risk reports and dashboards for senior management.

5.0 Technical Problem Solving & Support

5.1 Provide expert guidance to resolve complex technical challenges on-site.

5.2 Review and approve corrective measures for technical issues or non-conformities.

5.3 Support commissioning and handover by addressing technical queries and issues.

5.4 Facilitate root-cause analysis for recurring problems and propose preventive measures.

5.5 Act as a technical authority for contractors and project teams on engineering methods and standards.

5.6 Collaborate with design consultants and contractors to identify practical solutions for on-site challenges.

5.7 Provide timely recommendations to minimize project delays, cost impacts, and rework.

5.8 Evaluate temporary works, alternative construction methods, or design modifications for feasibility and safety.

5.9 Ensure lessons learned from problem-solving are documented and shared with the project team.

5.10 Conduct technical workshops or brainstorming sessions to address complex issues collaboratively.

5.11 Monitor the implementation of corrective actions to ensure effectiveness and compliance with design standards.

5.12 Support the project team in decision-making regarding technical feasibility, constructability, and quality requirements.

5.13 Coordinate with QA/QC and HSE teams to ensure technical solutions maintain safety and compliance.

6.0 Stakeholder Coordination & Communication

6.1 Serve as the key liaison between project teams, consultants, contractors, and clients on technical matters.

6.2 Participate in progress meetings and present technical updates clearly and accurately.

6.3 Ensure effective communication of technical requirements, changes, and decisions.

6.4 Support cross-functional collaboration to resolve technical challenges efficiently.

6.5 Escalate critical technical issues to senior management with actionable recommendations.

6.6 Maintain clear and traceable records of all technical communications with stakeholders.

6.7 Coordinate with internal teams, including QA/QC, HSE, and procurement, to ensure alignment on technical matters.

6.8 Facilitate workshops and review sessions with stakeholders to address technical issues and improve project outcomes.

7.0 Resource & Team Management

7.1 Supervise and mentor junior engineers, draftsmen, and site staff.

7.2 Allocate tasks and responsibilities effectively to optimize team performance.

7.3 Conduct training and workshops to enhance technical knowledge and skills.

7.4 Promote teamwork, collaboration, and knowledge sharing within the project team.

7.5 Monitor team performance and provide feedback to support professional development.

7.6 Identify skill gaps within the team and implement targeted training or coaching programs.

7.7 Encourage accountability and ownership of assigned tasks to ensure high-quality outcomes

8.0 Reporting & Documentation

8.1 Prepare technical reports, progress updates, and documentation for management and clients.

8.2 Maintain organized records of design approvals, submittals, inspections, and correspondence.

8.3 Develop dashboards or trackers to monitor project performance, technical issues, and resolutions.

8.4 Ensure all reports and documents are accurate, timely, and compliant with organizational standards.

8.5 Document lessons learned from technical challenges, risk events, and project variations.

8.6 Prepare reports for audits, regulatory submissions, and client reviews.

8.7 Track key performance indicators (KPIs) related to project progress, quality, and technical compliance.

8.8 Provide predictive analysis to anticipate potential delays, risks, or cost impacts

8.9 Ensure all technical documentation is version-controlled and easily accessible to authorized personnel.

8.10 Compile and submit periodic reports summarizing team performance, resource utilization, and project milestones.

9.0 Procurement & Material Coordination

9.1 Coordinate with procurement teams to ensure timely availability of materials, equipment, and resources.

9.2 Review technical specifications for materials and equipment before procurement.

9.3 Support evaluation of vendor proposals and technical compliance of supplies.

9.4 Resolve technical issues related to material quality, compatibility, or installation.

9.5 Ensure materials meet design, safety, and quality requirements before use on-site.

9.6 Monitor material delivery schedules to prevent delays in construction activities.

9.7 Coordinate with suppliers and contractors to resolve discrepancies or shortages.

9.8 Maintain records of material approvals, submittals, and test certificates.

9.9 Conduct site inspections to verify material compliance and suitability before installation.

9.10 Collaborate with design and technical teams to evaluate alternative materials or solutions when necessary.

9.11 Track usage of materials and report on consumption to support budget control and forecasting.

9.12 Provide guidance on proper storage, handling, and installation of materials to avoid damage or wastage.

Job Requirements

a) Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or relevant Engineering discipline.

b) Master’s degree or MBA in Engineering Management, Construction Management, or a related field is a plus.

c) Professional certifications such as PMP (Project Management Professional), PE (Professional Engineer), or equivalent is highly desirable.

d) Additional certifications in quality management, safety (NEBOSH/OSHA), or construction management are advantageous.

e) Minimum of 8–12 years of experience in construction project engineering or related roles.

f) Proven track record in managing large-scale or complex construction projects from planning to execution.

g) Experience in design review, site supervision, technical coordination, and project reporting.

h) Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and collaborate effectively with stakeholders.

i) Hands-on experience in contract administration, procurement coordination, and risk management is preferred.
