JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

About the Role:

As Assistant Vice President, Legal (Technology & Operations), you will report to the Vice President and provide strategic legal support to Astro’s Technology and Operations teams. This includes drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts with Astro’s enterprise customers and offering legal guidance across broadcast technology, IT, broadband, digital platforms, infrastructure, supply chain, product marketing, and sales.

The role requires a deep understanding of technology, media, commercial law, and intellectual property issues, as well as the ability to translate complex legal matters into concise, actionable insights for business stakeholders.

What You'll Do:

1. Contract Negotiation & Advisory

• Draft, review, negotiate, and advise on a range of commercial agreements, including:

  • Technology & Infrastructure: Acquisition, licensing, and maintenance of software, hardware, satellite transponders, and content delivery systems.

  • IT & Cloud Services: Contracts for SaaS, IaaS, PaaS, licensing of IT software, and data protection agreements.

  • Sales & Marketing: Subscription agreements, product marketing terms, and sponsorship agreements.

  • Confidentiality & Compliance: Non-disclosure agreements, service agreements, and legal letters related to Astro’s commercial establishments.

2. Legal Advisory & Risk Management

• Provide legal advice on technology and operations transactions, regulatory frameworks, and intellectual property laws.

• Ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements for the sale and distribution of Astro’s products and services.

• Keep abreast of legal developments, industry trends, and emerging risks.

3. Dispute Resolution & Litigation Management

• Manage disputes related to contractual and quasi-contractual relationships, with a focus on amicable resolution where possible.

• Coordinate with external legal counsel on litigation matters and develop legal strategies to protect Astro’s interests.

4. Compliance & Legal Training

• Develop and implement compliance policies, contract templates, and legal precedents.

• Conduct training sessions to educate internal teams on key legal principles, regulatory updates, and risk mitigation strategies.

5. Stakeholder Engagement & Strategic Legal Support

• Translate complex legal and technical issues into clear, actionable insights for business stakeholders.

• Build strong relationships across the Legal department and wider business teams, fostering trust and collaboration.

• Work alongside cross-functional teams to establish a legal and regulatory framework that enables Astro’s business objectives.

REQUIREMENTS:

Who You Are:

• Degree in Law. Professionally Qualified (CLP or equivalent) and/or called to the Malaysian Bar.

• 7-12 years of legal practice experience in a highly regarded legal firm or in-house equivalent preferably in the field of Technology, Multimedia and Telecommunications (TMT).

• Strong legal expertise in technology, media, and commercial law, with a solid understanding of broadcast technology, IT, cloud services, and digital platforms.

• Excellent contract drafting and negotiation skills, with a focus on balancing legal risk with business objectives.

• Ability to interpret complex legal issues and communicate them in a clear and commercially practical manner.

• Strong analytical and risk management mindset, with the ability to identify issues and propose strategic solutions.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of influencing and collaborating across teams.

• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities with strong organisational and time management skills.
