Your day at NTT DATA

The Lead Critical Facilities Maintenance Technician possess an expert level of knowledge of their role and is responsible for the operational integrity and regulatory compliance of the data center electrical, mechanical, and fire life safety systems.

This role is also responsible for the processes that maximize customer uptime in the most cost-effective way and ensures that data center problems are promptly identified and repaired quickly, that contractors deliver quality services, and that internal customer service level agreements are met. The Skilled Critical Facilities Maintenance Technician develops creative approaches to keep operational costs to a minimum, while improving efficiency, and implementing new strategies.

This role acts as an informal facilitator and/or team leader, fostering a collaborative and innovative team culture focused on achieving operational excellence.

What you'll be doing

Key Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical responsibilities include operation, maintenance and repair of chilled water systems and components, HVAC systems such as roof top units, CRAC/CRAH units, and humidification systems.
  • Electrical responsibilities include operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical/critical power distribution from the Utility/Generator main switchgear through the UPS systems out to the customer load.
  • Fire Life Safety responsibilities include operation, maintenance, and repair of fire suppression systems, including wet sprinkler systems and pre-action sprinkler systems as well as their associated detection devices.
  • Operates, monitors, maintains, and responds to abnormal conditions in facilities systems, areas include Electrical, Mechanical and Building Monitoring and Control Systems.
  • Tracks and analyses trends relating to MEP system and equipment operational characteristics.
  • Provides feedback to relevant teams on the effectiveness of existing standards and processes.
  • Works with contractors and consultants for all National Projects, consultants and clients fit-outs, system expansions, corrections, and upgrades.
  • Works with relevant teams to follow and track annual budgets.
  • Works with relevant teams to relay the status of the planned maintenance program status.
  • Ensures data center operates at maximum operational efficiency, including analyzing existing operating conditions, recommending new technologies, and improving overall efficiency and cost reduction.
  • Works with relevant teams to ensure the data center operates at maximum operational efficiency.
  • Serves in a technical writing capacity regarding the creation, review, and approval of procedures for operations, preventative or corrective maintenance activities and emergency operating procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Ensures a regular, predictable attendance which is essential for satisfactory performance.


Knowledge and Attributes:

  • Firm and proven understanding of the electrical and mechanical systems used in a data centre environment, including, but not limited to the following: electrical distribution and layout, transformers, PLC's, Generators, Switchgear, UPS systems, STS, ATS, PDU/RPP's, Chilled Water Systems, CRAC/CRAH's, Pre-Action Sprinkler Systems and associate Fire/Smoke Detections systems.
  • Advanced level knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25, and compliance issues as well as building codes, regarding fire life safety requirements and guidance.
  • Advanced level knowledge in industrial safety best practices (i.e. lockout/tag out, arc flash protection, OSHA, and state regulations)
  • Highly experienced with data trending / tracking and analysis and ability to rapidly learn and use PC based, integrated critical monitoring systems
  • Proficient with computers to include the utilisation of Microsoft programs such as Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Manages stress and/or fast pace effectively.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated advanced level of experience installing, maintaining, and/or troubleshooting large commercial and industrial systems including:
    • o Chilled Water Systems
    • o Large Centrifugal Chillers
    • o Cooling Towers
    • o Heat Exchangers
    • o Indirect Air Exchange Heat Wheel Rooftop units
    • o Water Treatment Systems
    • o VFD's and Pumps
    • o HVAC equipment
    • o CRAC/CRAH's
    • o Humidification Systems
    • o BMS and PLC Controls
    • o Emergency Standby Diesel Generator Systems
    • o Fuel/Oil systems,
    • o 480/277 and 208/120 electrical generation and distribution
    • o Static UPS Systems
    • o Dual Interlocked Fire Suppression Pre-Action Systems


Academic Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Relevant high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Relevant advanced qualification or equivalent work-related experience required
  • Relevant certifications such as:
    • o CPR/First Aid and NFPA70E Certification (can be gained during course of employment)
    • o OSHA-10 General Industry Course completion
    • o Forklift Certified (optional)


Required Experience:

  • Significant demonstrated experience in a similar role gained within a data center facilities environment.
  • Significant experienced in a mechanical/electrical role within critical facilities (preference given to data center, hospital, semi-conductor, or power plant experience).
  • Solid demonstrated experience as a data center technician L2 in a critical facility environment
  • Demonstrated experience as a critical facilities maintenance team leader.
  • Significant demonstrated experience installing, maintaining, and/or troubleshooting large commercial and industrial systems including:
    • o Chilled Water Systems
    • o Large Centrifugal Chillers
    • o Cooling Towers
    • o Heat Exchangers
    • o Indirect Air Exchange Heat Wheel Rooftop units
    • o Water Treatment Systems
    • o VFD's and Pumps
    • o HVAC equipment
    • o CRAC/CRAH's
