At SMX, Technical Designers are the guardians of precision, feasibility, and production excellence. At the Senior to Art Director level, you are both an expert in the execution and a leader in refining how ideas become manufacturable realities.
You will lead the technical design process from early ideation to final production handover, ensuring accuracy in structure, materials, costing, and timelines across product, packaging, POSM, and promotional items. This role requires fluency in 2D and 3D development, specification design, sampling, vendor communication, and mentoring of junior technical team members.
- Translate creative concepts into accurate dielines, mockups, and 3D renderings.
- Lead development of technical packs, BOMs, spec sheets, and sampling instructions.
- Ensure accuracy of dimensions, materials, finishes, and print specifications.
- Review and approve vendor samples, mockups, and prototypes against specs.
- Review and validate design files for production feasibility and cost-effectiveness.
- Ensure compliance with client requirements, regional manufacturing capabilities, and safety regulations.
- Provide technical direction to junior designers and external vendors.
- Conduct quality control checks before final approvals and manufacturing releases.
- Partner with creative, sourcing, and production teams to align output with design intent and budget.
- Support costing exercises by advising on materials, dimensions, and yield optimization.
- Manage documentation workflow and archival of technical assets.
- Lead improvements to technical workflows and documentation standards.
- Expert in packaging structures, product construction, and POSM formats.
- Proficient in Adobe Illustrator, CAD tools, and 3D software (e.g. Keyshot, Rhino, SolidWorks, Blender).
- Strong knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes (plastics, papers, fabrics, printing), and finishing techniques.
- Detail-oriented, accurate, and highly systematic in documentation.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, timelines, and sampling rounds simultaneously.
- Skilled in providing actionable feedback to vendors and internal teams.
- 5–8 years in technical or structural design roles within packaging, product development, or POSM environments.
- Hands-on experience developing production-ready dielines, mockups, and prototypes.
- Familiarity with Asia-based manufacturing and supplier coordination.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating complex technical work and problem-solving.
- Degree or diploma in Industrial Design, Product Design, Packaging Engineering, or equivalent.
Paid medical expenses up to RM600 per year.
Maximum of sixty (60) working days in the aggregate in each calendar year inclusive of non- hospitalization sick leave.
You will be entitled to 12 days of annual leave per year of continuous service on a pro-rated basis. This is in addition to statutory public holidays.
