Job Description

ABOUT US

We’re the world’s leading provider of secure financial messaging services, headquartered in Belgium. We are the way the world moves value – across borders, through cities and overseas. No other organisation can address the scale, precision, pace and trust that this demands, and we’re proud to support the global economy.

We’re unique too. We were established to find a better way for the global financial community to move value – a reliable, safe and secure approach that the community can trust, completely. We’re always striving to be better and are constantly evolving in an ever-changing landscape, without undermining that trust. Five decades on, our vibrant community reflects the complexity and diversity of the financial ecosystem. We innovate diligently, test exhaustively, then implement fast. In a connected and exciting era, our mission has never been more relevant. Swift now has a presence in 200+ countries and legal territories to serve a community of more than 12,000 banks and financial institutions.

About the Role

SWIFT is seeking an experienced, hands-on Software Engineering Manager to join our Real-Time Payment Solution team, part of the Market Infrastructures tribe.

The ideal candidate combines strong leadership with proven experience as a lead software engineer, including hands-on expertise in software development, testing, and delivery, along with demonstrated skills in mentoring and coaching engineers. Your expertise and experience in further improving our software delivery practices will be key.

Based in Kuala Lumpur, you will work in an agile team responsible for end-to-end delivery, from customer engagement to implementation and support. You will have a unique opportunity to broaden your technical knowledge, expand your network, and deepen your expertise within SWIFT’s global platform. You will collaborate in a truly international environment, with a strong presence in Malaysia and Belgium.

In this role, you will translate customer requirements into technical stories, contribute to software design and implementation, ensure high-quality, secure, and resilient software deliveries, support testing activities, and assist with customer support as needed. This is a unique opportunity to grow your technical expertise, amplify your leadership impact, and scale a high-performing team delivering on ambitious innovation goals.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Hiring, Coaching, and Mentorship: Lead engineers with diverse perspectives, providing coaching, motivation, and guidance to help them excel both technically and personally.
  • Performance and Growth: Set annual objectives, conduct performance appraisals, and provide constructive feedback to support career development and skills enhancement.
  • Software Delivery: Remain actively hands-on in design, development, and testing (including automated integration and regression), leveraging a range of proven technologies around Java, containers, and public cloud.
  • Technical Leadership: Provide guidance on software design patterns, architecture, and software delivery best practices to enhance the quality of our solution, with a strong focus on improving the team’s engineering practices such as shift-left testing, continuous delivery (CI/CD), DevOps tools and techniques, pair programming with junior engineers, and code reviews.
  • System Architecture Evolution: Contribute to the evolution and scaling of a mission-critical real-time payment infrastructure.
  • Collaboration and Alignment: Work closely with Product Owners, QA leads and Product Managers to ensure alignment and delivery excellence.
  • Continuous Learning and Knowledge Sharing: Foster a culture of learning, knowledge sharing, and engineering excellence across teams, contributing to consistency and best practices within the broader engineering organization.
  • Driving innovation: Stay updated on emerging technologies and help the team adopt new tools, frameworks, and practices that improve efficiency and quality.

Professional skills

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related disciplines.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience managing and mentoring engineers.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to build collaborative and diverse teams.
  • Passion for developing people and creating an inclusive, high-trust environment.
  • Customer-focused mindset with a strong commitment to quality and reliability.
  • Experience working in Agile environments with a DevOps mindset.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose complex technical issues and adapt to change.
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken).

Technical skills

  • 10+ years of experience with Java, Spring, and containerization technologies (Kubernetes) is required.
  • Hands-on experience with public cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) is required.
  • Practical experience with software development and CI/CD tools (Git, Maven, Jenkins, Nexus, Ansible) is required.
  • Practical experience with SQL databases (e.g., Oracle) is recommended.
  • Experience with Kafka and MQ is recommended.
  • Experience with REST and SOAP APIs is a plus.
  • Experience with automated, performance, and security testing is a plus.
