This independent contractor role gives you flexible access to on-demand OPI work, paid per active interpretation minute, while requiring strict adherence to confidentiality and professional ethics.

You act as the backbone of each call, ensuring clear, impartial communication so clients can deliver the right outcome. You will follow established OPI protocols, maintain professional conduct with limited-English proficient individuals, and help teams complete transactions and services accurately and on time.

Job Requirements

Responsibilities and Qualifications:

• Provide professional consecutive over-the-phone interpretation between Mandarin and English.
• Facilitate clear, accurate, and impartial communication across various industries.
• Adhere to industry standards, confidentiality protocols, and ethical interpreting practices.
• Maintain professionalism in all interactions with clients and limited-English proficient (LEP) individuals.
• At least 6 months of professional Over-the-phone Interpreting (OPI) experience (required).
• Knowledge of OPI interpreting protocols and formal training (greetings, confidentiality, turn-taking).
• Strong English proficiency (clear pronunciation, grammar, and communication skills).
• Reliable equipment: computer (Windows 10 or 11 / macOS 11 Big Sur or newer preferred), USB headset (Bluetooth headsets not allowed), stable internet connection, computer RAM: 16GB.
• Complete a language assessment test (English proficiency + interpretation skills) and pass onboarding; pre-employment background check required.
