The Opportunity

As the Legal Counsel, you will provide guidance, advice, and legal support to Worldline’s Financial Services and Merchant Services businesses in Southeast Asia and Greater China. You will collaborate closely with Sales, Project Management, Product, Executive Leadership, Compliance, and other internal departments to ensure alignment with local and the Group’s legal strategy and with applicable laws and regulations, with a strong focus on Greater China.

You will be part of the Northeast and Southeast Asia Legal Team. You will be based in Kuala Lumpur and report to the Deputy General Counsel. You will be part of a dynamic legal team within an international company and multi-cultural environment.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities​

  • Offer legal advice to business stakeholders with across a wide range of subject areas, including corporate, enterprise, commercial, regulatory, employment and labor related contracts/matters/issues; data privacy; dispute resolutions/litigation management and legal compliance issues;
  • Draft, review and negotiate a variety of commercial agreements and documentation across Worldline’s payment ecosystem, encompassing sales, procurement, strategic partnerships, joint ventures, investments, and other innovative business models, addressing legal issues such as intellectual property, and data protection;
  • Provide legal advice on new business products and models, including Cloud, SaaS, AI, while staying updated on rules, regulations, and other statutory requirements;
  • Provide legal training and continuously creating awareness in the Worldline entities' in relation to Worldline’s policies;
  • Developing and maintaining contract templates;
  • Keeping up-to-date knowledge of contract law, new laws and regulatory requirements in various jurisdictions where we have a presence in Southeast Asia and Greater China;
  • Support corporate, M&A activities, including post-merger integration;
  • Instruct and liaise with external counsels as necessary;
  • Assist in initiatives to digitize the contracts archive and legal workflows, including contracts lifecycle management;
  • Apply effective legal risk management techniques and offer proactive advice on possible legal issues;
  • Communicate, manage and negotiate with internal stakeholders as well as external parties.

Job Requirements

  • Required qualifications
    • Legally qualified in a common law jurisdiction with 8+ years of experience in a reputable law firm or in an in-house legal department providing support to business in an international environment;
    • Experience working on Greater China legal matters and contracting;
    • Excellent command of written and spoken English, business-level proficiency in Chinese and other Asian language;
    • Previous in-house technology (software, hardware, platforms, cloud, networks) experience, and particularly payments sector experience;
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • Strong knowledge of and affinity with contract law;
    • Data privacy experience;
    • Demonstrable legal experience in the Asia-Pacific region
    • Proactive, responsive, team player, meticulous, hardworking, business savvy, high degree of flexibility in the organising of working time, excellent communications skills, good sense of humour;
    • Able to work in a fast-paced environment;
    • Enthusiastic team player who enjoys partnering with cross-functional teams to solve complex issues, invest in others, and work collaboratively.
