JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
As Assistant Vice President, the person in this role will report to the Vice President and provide legal support to Astro’s Technology and Operation teams that would include drafting and negotiating contracts with Astro’s enterprise customers, working on contracts and providing advice in a number of key areas, such as broadcast technology, infrastructure and networks, IT, broadband, digital, and customer group, including supply chain, product marketing and sales.
The person must demonstrate a strong understanding and keen interest in technology, broadcast, media, commercial and intellectual property issues and also possess an ability to distil complex technical and legal issues into concise and accurate drafting.
The role will primarily consist of:
1. Reviewing, drafting, negotiating and advising on a variety of commercial contracts or operational issues, adding value with highest quality business-focussed legal expertise and advice on document structure and allocation of risk, relating to:
2. Developing and disseminating compliance policies, templates and precedents and also by providing legal training sessions.
3. Providing legal advice on technology and operations related transactions and arrangements, including on intellectual property laws, including any statutory and regulatory requirements applicable to the sale and distribution of Astro’s products and services, keeping abreast of changes in laws and any relevant court cases.
4. Managing disputes arising out of contractual and quasi-contractual relationships with the aim of amicable resolution and settlement and, if required, coordinate with external legal counsels and manage any litigation involving the company, including developing and directing any litigation strategies.
5. Presenting medium complexity legal concepts in a manner that is easy to understand and aids decision making, showing an ability to distil medium complexity issues into concise summaries.
6. With strong communications skills, building effective relationships with colleagues within both the Legal department and the wider business, developing trust and rapport at all levels.
7. Working with the rest of the Legal department in providing a legal and regulatory framework for the business to operate within, by developing and disseminating compliance policies, template and precedents and also by providing legal training sessions.
8. Bringing attention to detail coupled with strong analytical and commercial drafting skills.
9. Prioritising and planning effectively, demonstrating proactive and good organisational skills.
10. Demonstrating commitment, integrity and judgment when presenting merits of transactions/risks exposure to Business Units.
11. Adapting quickly, coordinate, prioritise and plan effectively in a fast paced environment with competing priorities.
12. Demonstrating a passion for TV and technology to help bring the best content and innovation to Astro customers.
13. Interpreting and applying laws and regulations, formulate and issue legal opinions to ensure that the interests of the company are safeguarded at all times.
REQUIREMENTS:

•Degree in Law
•Professionally Qualified (CLP or equivalent) and/or called to the Malaysian Bar
•Excellent up-to-date understanding of contract law, telecommunications law, and related media laws, dispute and litigation process, technical concepts related to technology and IT
•7-12 years of legal practice experience in a highly regarded legal firm or in-house equivalent (preferably in the field of Technology, Multimedia and Telecommunications (TMT) related work)
•Good analytical skills
•Ability to work under pressure and enjoys working in a dynamic environment
•Ability to negotiate contracts and find solutions in deadlocks
•Good communication skills
•Ability to work independently and in a team environment
•Enjoys high pressure and a dynamic environment
•Excellent communication (both verbal and written) skills
•Digitally savvy
•Excellent drafting, legal and research skills
•Familiar with and competent user of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and Powerpoint
