The Manager, Commercial and Economic reports directly to the VP, International Assets Oversight and is responsible for leading economic modelling, financial assessments, and commercial activities for the Group’s international assets, with a particular focus on the Brunei asset portfolio. The role plays a key part in driving strategic decision-making, value creation, and ensuring the financial robustness of existing assets, projects, and acquisitions.

The position provides expertise in the development of economic models, commercial negotiations, due diligence for new ventures, reserves valuation, and optimization of asset performance, while ensuring effective collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Economic modelling and financial assessment 
    • Lead the long-term economic modelling for Brunei asset 
    • Lead the valuation and economic modelling for external reserves audit exercise and driving the desired outcome required
    • Lead  the annual impairment assessments for Brunei, working closely with Finance and relevant asset teams 
    • Monitor and reconcile (if required) annual cash flow for the asset; working closely with the Economics Business Planning team to ensure alignment to overall Group Cash Flow
    • Lead economic modelling for new projects  & provide project rankings
  • New Ventures
    • Lead economic modelling for new ventures / opportunities in Brunei and other international assets
    • Support due diligence activities 
  • Commercial 
    • Establish new commercial agreements to support the Brunei asset or any new acquisitions e.g., gas agreements, joint bidding agreements, JOA
    • JOA and JV compliance oversight
  • Value creation/optimisation 
    • Identify opportunities and develop strategies for value creation, cost savings within the asset portfolio
    • Implement identified/approved projects 
  • Reporting and presentations
    • Developing reports, management presentations and spreadsheet models for technical and financial analysis of projects.
    • Prepare monthly reporting
  • Stakeholders management 
    • External – reserves auditor, financial auditor
    • Internal including asset teams, functional leads, management, and Senior Leadership Team (SLTs)

 

KEY SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Qualification and Education: 
    • Possess a bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Engineering, or an equivalent qualification from recognized universities. A master’s degree (MBA or related field) is an advantage.
  • Working Experience: 
    • At least 8–12 years’ experience in economic modelling, financial analysis, commercial negotiations, and asset valuation, preferably within the upstream oil and gas sector or energy industry.
  • Skills and Knowledge: 
    • Strong expertise in economic modelling, cash flow forecasting, and financial analysis specific to upstream oil and gas assets.
    • Solid understanding of joint venture frameworks, joint operating agreements (JOA), and commercial contract negotiations.
    • Strong knowledge of impairment testing, reserves audit requirements, and project evaluation techniques.
    • Demonstrated ability to drive value creation, optimize asset performance, and propose strategic initiatives.
    • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
    • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to manage internal and external stakeholder relationships effectively.
    • Proficient in developing management reports, financial models, and delivering professional presentations.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of multi-disciplinary teams across geographies.
